CHANGES TO POSTMARKING RULES BY USPS MAY AFFECT THE TIMELINESS OF YOUR PAYMENTS

The USPS has changed its postmark rule effective December 24, 2025, meaning the date on a postmark now reflects when mail is first processed at a sorting facility, not when you drop it off, potentially making time-sensitive mail late. To ensure an on-time postmark for deadlines (like your Quality of Care payments, taxes, ballots, legal documents), you must take items inside the Post Office and request a free, manual, hand-stamped postmark, or mail items days in advance.

What Changed?

1. Old Rule: Postmark usually showed the date you dropped mail in a collection box or at the Post Office.
2. New Rule: Postmark reflects the date it enters the automated sorting system at a regional hub, which can be days later due to network consolidation.
